For the longest time, we used to believe that the only way we could reach our goals and go through progress was if we kept working hard.
This notion allowed us to develop a thinking grounded on the belief that we're only at our best when we're coursing through or moving. Although it gave us the best skills that have led us here, we might have caught ourselves in moments of extreme exhaustion and the dreaded burnout. While we commend ourselves for being resilient (see our take on the girl boss culture,) we have to address how the pressure to have our own space and own our success could take a toll on us and topple the delicate balance that should exist between success and wellness. It can ruin how we see the journey— a burden or a chore rather than something beautiful with all its natural twists and turns.
The first step? Understanding that you have to, you need to rest and unwind. Even the best melodies have rests in between. For us to continue creating our versions of the big picture, we have to ensure that we put great value in resting and what we do with it. It's those times where we restore when we've given our all, reflect, and realize how far we've come or have our minds in play (or complete rest.) In case you find yourself in need of more days like that, here's what you can do:
Go for an endorphin rush.
Get up and move when you completely let your mind go while chasing an endorphin rush. This concept is also new to us— as big fans of mindful movement, we learned that some Women in Progress also find a kick in completely just letting minds wander as they chase a rush of those happy hormones. Take your pick with walks, regular dance parties to your favorite playlists, or movements that allow you to let your mind wander.
Stare at a wall.
Some ruts are more difficult than most, especially if you're constantly driving to be on 'create' mode, but if there's one thing we learned from Rahaf Harfoush is that a wall could be the answer. At first, it might seem strange, but this digital anthropologist advises stare-offs with walls. The logic? It allows your mind to be at complete rest. There's no need to come up with the next big idea. Or for your imagination to draw up the answer to a question that has you stumped. Just a moment to recharge your brain— completely.
Find the hobby for you. Or three.
We've made a case for hobbies and what they can do for our wellness, and we still find their value true to this day. When finding a hobby, remember the very reason you started it: to give you a moment of rest, a pressure-free zone! You don't need to stick to one if you find you're going in circles or that things are repetitive. Keep discovering and re-discovering!
Our other go-to's
Take 5-minute breathers outdoors. Get some fun under the sun (or weather that’s just right!) Tune into your surroundings for the perfect moment of rest.
Go with mindful de-stimulations.
Pique your senses in a holistic skin experience. Find the treat meant for you and get a restful experience to skin progress as well.
Have a brunch out with your favorite people.
De-clutter regularly. From tables to closets, this cathartic experience can give you the release you’d need to refocus!
Make yourself your favorite meal or go-to drink.
Choose to read for fun. Love your self-betterment books and your indulging ones, too. You’re allowed to find enjoyment in (and be proud of) reading for leisure too.
Go on a call to catch up.
Remember, the only way for unwinding to work for your focus is to find it a constant in life. Rest isn't a reward or prize for your hard work but an essential in your journey. Go consistent even in unwinding, Woman in Progress®️
